Picked the Wrong Day

Yesterday started out as a normal day. WT was working on lighting sources for a Asian table he was creating and I was running around shopping.

In the afternoon I was puttering aound with my inventory then got very serious about weeding out old clothes and other things. About an hour into my inventory reorg I started having wierd things happen to the inventory. I decided I better do a log off, but when I tried to return I discovered that the database was down. I tried several times over a period of maybe an hour, but it was a typical Linden weekend special. When I finally was able to log back in, I was “Ruthed” and my inventory was not coming up. It was very frustrating and I was afraid I might have lost all the inventory changes I made, or worse. I was feeling like I picked the wrong day to work on my inventory.

In real life, I’ve made a career in software development and particularly database development. I find it hard to imagine a major database system that has as many “issues” as SL seems to have. Maybe I overreacted to yesterday’s problems by not logging back on, but I have had several friends who lost their entire inventories on occassion and those thoughts were running though my mind during the latest screw-up. There are many signs that the Lindens are reengineering and refactoring both the client and server software, but I’m sorry to say that confidence in their processes is low, especially their testing procedures.

Anyway, I stayed away yesterday and today things appear to be normal. Maybe today will be normal but I’m reluctant to make further changes to my inventory.
