New Discoveries

I live in New Key West for a lot of reasons, and yes, I like Jimmy Buffet music. Anyway, I felt like going to a concert on Saturday, so I opened up Events and right at the top of the list was a “Live” Jimmy Buffet concert. I wanted to get there early so I’d have a good spot, but when I arrived at the site I was surprised to find a place that didn’t really have much of a concert feel to it, more like a night club with a tiny stage. NTL, I waited patiently and a few people joined me up at the front of the dance area.

While waiting, an avie named Geo Meek asked if this was a “Live” concert, and I said, yes but was starting to have doubts as to what that meant. And we chatted about that and he mentioned that he makes movies of concerts. Now, that got my attention and we started chatting in voice as the concert began. I told him about my failed attempt to make an in-world movie in the past, and he acknowledged that it can be difficult. He also mentioned that he will be teaching a course in movie making at Insight Virtual College, which was of great interest to me.

As the concert which turned out to be a rebroadcast started, we chatted about a wide range of subjects and I was impressed by Geo’s knowledge. He gave me numerous URLs to youtube sites, including a broadcast of Kevin Kelly discussing Web 3.0. The Kelly discussion is a thoughtful discussion of the direction of the web and indirectly, to the future of Second Life.

Geo also gave me the URL to his Geo Meek Channel, which features some of his work including videos shot with a version of the SL viewer that animates avie mouths while speaking – check out this Lips Are Moving! (oh my! oh my! hehe) My favorite video is Billy Bob Linden: Public Service Announcement #1. (I laughed till I cried.) Geo opened my eyes to a whole new vista here in Second Life, and I’ll be presenting more information about LMs he gave me to some of the finer sims.
