The Lindens came through for me. Apparently, I had accidentally set “vertex shaders” in the Hardware options of the Graphics preferences. I suppose this happened when I was experimenting with my graphis settings. Anyway, all indications are that my rendering and performance issues are resolved. It’s like a new dawn.
