I’ve been thinking about feelings. Everyone has feelings, even people who don’t like to experience them. I believe that a large number of men and a smaller number of women ignore their feelings, opting for logic instead, as if logic was a replacement for feelings. The problem with ignoring feelings is that they are real and they are relevant.
The greatest lesson I ever learned in life is, you don’t know what you don’t know. It sounds simplistic but it applies to every aspect of our lives from science to feelings. No one who has ever written a word has ever been able to describe the Universe in a way that explains away the logic problem of where the Universe is; in other words, if the Universe is a thing (albeit a big thing) then what lies beyond…a void, nothingness, boundless space, the infinite? The human brain cannot logically comprehend this; we just don’t know. And the point is, if you don’t allow yourself to feel, you will have no comprehending feelings than human beings have for comprehending the infinite.
If you have convinced yourself that you don’t need feelings (and I’m not talking about sociopaths), then you cannot understand someone else who does feel. If you hurt someone’s feelings and you explain to them that there is no reason for them to feel hurt, and you assume you’ve solved the problem, you may discover that the person’s attitude toward you changed, but you’ll never understand why.
In RL I had an extraordinary boss. He was not an emtional guy, in fact, he was a brilliant and logical technologist. However, he was one of the men I’ve known who truly understood the importance of feelings. He told me that his wife had taught him that resolving a problem does not necessarily resolve the feelings associated with the problem. His understanding of feelings made him a very powerful and loved leader. In fact, he frequently consulted with his wife on issues where peoples feelings were involved.
I believe that people who are attuned with their feelings have an extra sense, women’s intuition for example. I really believe that, but there are many men attuned with their feelings as well. Yes, some people are too focused on their feelings (I hope I’m not one), seemingly wallowing in them, but being out of touch with your feelings is equally crippling. In Second Life, at times it seems like feelings are on steroids, and I’ll probably want to write about this in the future. But for now, I’m just thinking about feelings and wanted to share some thoughts.
