Harry Denimore is a lot of things: musician, philosopher, professor and in Second Life, he’s DJ Hoodoo Harry. Anyway and to make a long story short, Harry asked me to host for him last night at Junkyard Blues. I almost declined but I like Harry and his special blend of bluesy music, and it was time for me to do a hosting gig at the JY.
Fortunately, there wasn’t a lot of time between when Harry asked and show date, so I was too busy trying to throw together some gestures for the show to be worried. NTL, in the last few minutes before the show, I did get nervous. Why get nervous? Well, the crowds at the Junkyard are always huge and by the time I arrived there were over forty peeps at Miriam’s show. A long time ago, a DJ told me, “The Junkyard is The Bigtime”. So, nervous and all I began my gig with The Hoodoo Man. And I had a blast. I love hosting and trying to make people feel welcome and comfortable. /hooo
We have a great crowd all evening, ebbing and flowing between thirty and fifty peeps.
After the show, Harry asked if I’d be interested in doing more gigs in the future and the truth is, I had fun and am thinking about it. Hosting for Ziffy at Shorty’s on Fridays has worked well for me, but the problem I have with too much hosting is how easy it is for me to get burned out. I mean, there was a time when I was hosting for a different DJ every night at Magi’s The Line and that was too much. Since then, I’ve backed away, but maybe I can open up a bit.
