It’s true. Green Acres Golf Course is closing up in a couple weeks. It’s been almost two years and Morton & Kae have made it the premier golf course in Second Life. When I learned the news I contacted Morton and he basically said it’s been a good run, but it’s time to move on to other things.
Anyone who has played at Green Acres has been immersed in the beauty and enjoyment of the game. It is a fascinating game, inworld golf. It’s a social game too. It is really a perfect activity for a virtual world. And I spoke with Morton about perhaps finding an entrepreneur to pickup where he & Kae are leaving off. Morton is open to this, but not actively seeking a deal.
Here are some ideas I floated by Morton: 1) a golf club with member fees, afterall there are almost 3,000 members of the Green Acres group; 2) a rim of sims (similar to Junkyard Blues) where owners open onto the golf course and also agree to pay for membership in the club.
I’m sure there are other ideas that a real entrepreneur could come up with, but here is the main fact: it takes about L$1,200 a day to keep the club going. Morton tells me that Kae wants to keep the club open through December, but he simply wants to move onto other things. I can’t help thinking this is a golden opportunity for the right kind of Second Life businessman or business group.
I’ll be taking friends over for some golf before the club closes, partly for the fun of the game and also as a tribute to the couple who made all this happen. Hope to see you there.
Thanks for comments LeLe & Kia… I think I know Morton well enough to know that when he says he's ready to move on to other things (Morton & Kae have experimented with several projects over the years), that's really the issue. I don't think it's a financial issue, more of a commitment of time and mindshare. It is amazing how fast it grew and how many skeptical friends were completely swallowed up in the experience of inworld golfing once they tried it. Let's hope someone sees the potential out there.Hey! Let's go golfing, girlfriends. /me smiles

I think a lot of things will be closing in SL in the future. It is just too expensive to have/run a sim forever, and the RL times, they are a changing. It makes perfect sense (sadly) that the economic problems are finally taking their toll in SL.
