When I wrote part 1, I expected to complete part 2 a couple of days later, but that was a month ago.
Lessons In Organization
In part 1 I talked about what I believe my strengths are as a blogger and photographer. Since then I’ve probed a little deeper into this blog, even back to the original Being Yordie Sands. Also I’m faced with either setting priorities for my blogging and limiting my activities in Second Life, or giving up on both.
When I analyze this blog I find it touches many topics and only a handful of those topics contribute to the blog’s purpose. I also studied blogs I admire and found that my favorites have a clearer sense of who they are. I also found Vaneeesa Blaylock’s reorganization of iRez.me salon inspiring in the way she created dedicated section of the magazine for the key categories of content. My take away is that the right organization will enable me to manage my time and improve the quality of my favorite content.
Improvements Coming Soon
My blogs have undergone many changes over the years, not the least of which was moving from Blogger to WordPress. And here’s the thing, there are still 900 posts that were never imported into this blog. So, one of the priorities for the coming year will be to put all of my work into WordPress.
Then there’s this. I’ve owned yordiesands.com for a couple of years now. I chose not to replace with yordiesands.wordpress.com because I was concerned that I’d lose all my readers, and what with the loss suffered when I moved from yordiesands.blogspot.com, I felt I’d lose everything. I’ve since learned that there are many readers who followed me anyway, so I now regret not having made that change. so, one of the other changes coming will be to change the blog’s link to yordiesands.com (btw, you can use yordiesands.com and it will redirect to here).
Finally, there’s content. I’ve thought about this for several years but I finally see a way to limit and organize my content. Here’s what I’ve come up with for Categories: Blogging, Events, Exploring, Features, Perspectives, Technical and Writing. It may not seem very different, but within Features is where I think I’ll find the real focus for this blog. Under Features I have chosen some regular topics: Fashion & Style, Homes & Gardens, Japanese Gardens, Yordie’s Excellent Adventures and some surprises. If you go back about a year, you’ll see how those topics evolved in a major change last year. So, stay tuned!
Writing From The Heart
I believe that a lot of blogging is to writing as, scribbling is to fine cursive handwriting, or grabbing a burger from fast food restaurant is to dining at a fine restaurant. I’ve developed many sloppy writing habits by blogging, and I’ve asserted that this is the way things are. But when I’ve studied fine blogs I’ve found that many of my faves are well written. And I want to improve that too as I blog forward.
Regardless of content or quality, I believe all of my blogging has always been from a personal point of view, first person, active and rarely as a reporter. This is something I’ve cultivated and must keep, it is my blogging style and my voice. And that’s all good, but I want more, much more. I want to write more from my heart. I haven’t changed my mind about no long writing about my romantic connection here, but I may explore romance and sex in iRez.me Sex and the Virtual City section.
