I’m just a woman with an overactive imagination. I’m educated in the sense that “I never let schooling interfere with my education.” ~Mark Twain. Well, I do have some formal education, but I love the Twain quote.
For several years I spent far too much time in the virtual world called Second Life™ where my avatar starred as the heroine of a virtual fantasy life. Before the end of my first year in SL, I began documenting my experiences through blogging in Being Yordie Sands©. My blogging turned into a journey of discovery about myself and led to other writing projects.
In 2013, I stepped away from Second Life and over time found my connection with that world begin to dissolve. It was a difficult transition because I’d met some wonderful people and had amazing experiences, but I also came to realize that I’d become addicted. (Read my insights into gaming addition in “Spiritual Opium” commentary.)
I’ve tried returning to SL on several occasions with new avatars, but it wasn’t the same as being Yordie Sands. Nonetheless, Yordie still pops into SL for brief visits from time to time, and usually visit my favorite blues club, Junkyard Blues. I still love the bayou locale, great bluesy tunes, easy dancing, and seeing old friends.
My real life is far away from the relative wilderness of the northwest where I lived during most of my second life. These days are focused on the real world, especially during winter months. And although you could say that my second life has come to an end, my virtual life continues, frequently on Xbox Live, also as Yordie Sands. I don’t play a lot of multiplayer games, but my favorite is still Fallout 76.
In 2019, I completed my debut novel, The Temporal Expeditions© Escape from Extinction is Book I of a planned trilogy. Unfortunately, the pandemic interfered with many aspects of normal life, but also made me aware of complexities of human nature I hadn’t fully understood. And I have discovered an unavoidable theme that must be written into Book II, perhaps even calling for some reworking of Book I. I’ve started to work on a new draft of Book II and hope to complete it in 2023.
I thought I invented the name “Yordie” but much later I discovered that it’s a common name in Holland and elsewhere. So, for better or worse, I’m stuck with Yordie Sands, but I do enjoy being Yordie. She is different from the real me in one very obvious way, she never ages. She is also nicer than I am. And naturally, I love the fact that she always looks great, never has a bad hair day, and maintains her perfect shape without exercising or dieting. *smiles*

I enjoyed reading about your romantic adventures in SL. I would have said a little about mine but the comments were closed!! I could relate to your feelings and how does that happen!! – Swept away by the pixel sea of love!!!
And all the “boring” details of these very short lived and often hurtful encounters. ( not always so boring!!) I called it the “ease of behaving badly anonymously!!”

Hi Cybele… yeah, far too easy to become involved in romantic affairs that are based on misguided beliefs. Also, when I’d finally had my fill, so to speak, I felt like I’d gone through high school again. It really is a 2nd life and we got to make a lot of mistakes we didn’t make the first time. hehe

Speaking to Yordie here, when I started reading sci-fi, virtual reality only existed in books, so I would allow my imagination to go from there. It is awesomely wonderful to find you were, stretching your wings (so to speak) and livin’. I’m lovin’ it all! Penny 🙂

I think you are my twin. 🙂 Same thing going here, live in a remote area. I do live in a small town, 150 people, especially when one works nights and everyone else is gone when you are at home, but it is remote too! 🙂
